What do I use to get stuff done?

Recently, I came across a website called The Setup which interviews a variety of people about what they use on a daily basis to get their work done. I thought it was brilliant idea. After this article posts, check for me in the Community section of their website.

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Andrew Canella and I run a blog called Internet Soufflé. I’m a musician, I have a degree in psychology and have worked in the insurance industry for 8 years.

What hardware are you using?

I currently use a MacBook Pro with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and a 15″ LED screen, 500 GB HD, and 4 GB of RAM. I unfortunately have the glossy screen version, as the matte option was not available with this particular model.

I have a 32GB iPhone 4, a Kodak EasyShare Z712 camera with 12x Zoom, and a Minolta Maxxum 5 SLR film camera with a 28-90 zoom lens and Quantaray QAF flash unit. Though it takes beautiful photos, I’m much too lazy busy to get the film developed so I don’t use it much. For documents and 35mm photos I have a Canon scanner. For the most part, the iPhone has replaced all of the above tools out of competent convenience.

I have two Western Digital MyBook external hard drives and a Western Digital TV that plugs into my Panasonic Plasma television for watching ripped DVDs and TV shows. I run an Airport Extreme as my main router and an Airport Express into my Onkyo stereo so I can stream music via AirTunes over Wi-Fi.

Though this may not qualify as hardware, I always have a Zebra F-301 pen on me. It is the only pen I’ll use.

And what software?

I run my website using WordPress and host it at A Small Orange. I have about 30 plugins that I run for various reasons and write most of my content in TextEdit. I’m a big fan of Simplenote and Stickies for keeping track of things and always have Twitter running on the desktop. I use F.lux so as to not burn my eyes out and Caffeine to lessen the irritation of my screen dimming while I read.

For image editing I use Adobe Photoshop CS3, XLD for converting music, Handbrake for ripping DVDs and iSquint for compressing video for iPhone. Google Chrome is my main browser at the moment and Google Notifier is my favorite e-mail “client.” But really, I manage all of my GMail in the browser.

What would be your dream setup?

I’d love to have an iPad for reading and proofing my site for mobile use. I’m waiting for the (hopefully) retina display on the eventual iPad 3. I’d like a MacBook Air with a 15″ screen (if one existed) and a 27″ display. I’d love a digital Canon Rebel (or some sort of digital SLR camera) but I probably wouldn’t use it much. Other than that I can’t say I’m dissatisfied with anything I have or don’t have. But an ultra-modern office with a Barcelona chair would be nice.
